Connecticut Licensing Requirements

Age & Education

Must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED.

Training Requirement

Complete one of the following pathways:

  • Associate Degree: 2-year AAS in Ophthalmic Dispensing from an accredited program
  • Apprenticeship: 2 years (4,000 hours) supervised training under a licensed optician or optometrist
Required Examinations

Pass both national certification exams:

1. ABO (American Board of Opticianry)

Spectacle dispensing - 125 questions, 70% pass

2. NCLE (National Contact Lens Examiners)

Contact lens fitting - 125 questions, 70% pass

Education & Training Options

Associate Degree (2 Years)

Complete an Associate of Applied Science in Ophthalmic Dispensing from a COA-accredited program.

Apprenticeship (2 Years)
