Ohio Licensing Requirements

Age & Basic Requirements

Education/Training Pathway

Complete one of the following:

  • Associate Degree: 2-year AAS in Ophthalmic Dispensing from an accredited program
  • Apprenticeship: 2 years (4,000 hours) of supervised training under a licensed optician or optometrist

1. ABO (American Board of Opticianry)

Spectacle dispensing competency - 125 questions

2. NCLE (National Contact Lens Examiners)

Education & Training Pathways

Associate Degree (2 Years)

Complete an Associate of Applied Science degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing from a COA-accredited program. Covers comprehensive optical theory, dispensing, contact lenses, and practical skills.
